Durability

Under a generalistic perspective

Here at the Garden Generator startup we follow an internal matrix we call general durability which is a holistic approach inspired by holistic management from Allan Savory and by the DGNB System.

In short, the matrix ensures that the settlement does not act as a static object, but as a learning and evolving system that combines technical efficiency with ecological regeneration.
A helpful comparison: our internal General Durability Matrix can be thought of as the genetic code of a long-lived tree. Just as a tree's DNA contains the information it needs to grow over centuries, adapt to changing seasons, and recycle nutrients efficiently, the matrix provides the “blueprint” for the settlement. It ensures that all parts of the system work together harmoniously so that the community remains stable and vibrant well into the future.

Durability is about providing for our own requirements of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to provide for theirs. It is a multidisciplinary approach that seeks to balance economic, socio-cultural, and environmental dimensions to create a more fair and antifragile future. It is a positive step by step way that can and hopefully will lead to the generation of a fabulous future for the human race as well as all living beings on planet earth, through the voluntary participation of everyone in his or her profession (Including fauna, flora and fungi; ALL LIFE participate in this process). It is based on three main dimensions: Environmental, Socio-cultural and Economical quality, but it is not limited to these 3 dimensions or pillars. The startup Garden-Generator is framing its business model and vision by 9 dimensions in general. Details about the 9 sustainability dimensions are to find bellow.

Environmental durability refers to the protection and conservation of natural resources and ecosystems, and the reduction of pollution and toxic waste. Social durability is about ensuring that all members of society have access to the resources and opportunities they need to lead healthy and fulfilling lives in dignity. Economic durability is about generating a growing and antifragile economy that promotes individual and community well-being.

One of the key challenges of durability is to balance the competing demands of these different pillars. For example, economic growth is often seen as a key driver of prosperity, but it can also put pressure on natural resources and contribute to social inequalities. Similarly, protecting the environment may be seen as a priority, but it may also come at the expense of economic growth or social well-being. Imagine the flat, horizontal surface of a table that you use regularly, on it there are your stuff including your coffee cup; it must be supported by feet. In engineering and physics, we know that it needs three legs to be static (A balanced state). The same is applicable to durability.

To achieve sustainability, it is important to consider the interconnections between these different pillars and to take a holistic approach that incorporates the long-term impacts of our actions. This requires collaboration and cooperation between different sectors and levels of society, including government, business and civil society.

Overall, sustainability is a complex and multi-layered concept that requires a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of several dimensions. The Garden-Generator startup came to existence with the goal to develop  independent long-term  vision for- and perspective on sustainability including as many dimensions as necessary.

The 9 dimensions proposition to general durability:

Leadership quality

Leadership quality plays a critical role in promoting durability and sustainable development. A leader with well based knowledge, skills and modesty can generate a vision for a durable future and inspire others to work toward it.

Physical health quality

Physical health quality is a key aspect of durability and sustainable development. It refers to the physical well-being and conditions of individuals and populations and is closely linked to environmental, social and economic factors.

Psychological health quality

Psychological health is an important aspect of durability and sustainable development. A healthy and resilient community is essential to promoting and sustaining development.

Economical quality

Economical quality refers to the overall health and well-being of an economy and its ability to meet the needs of its citizens. In terms of durability, economic quality is an important dimension that must be taken into account to achieve sustainable development.

Environmental quality

Environmental quality refers to the condition of the natural environment and the extent to which it supports the health and well-being of living organisms, including humans. It includes a wide range of factors such as air and water quality, soil health, biodiversity, and the availability of natural resources.

Socio-cultural quality

Socio-cultural quality refers to the social and cultural well-being of a community and its ability to provide for the needs of its members. In relation to durability, socio-cultural quality is an important aspect that needs to be considered in order to achieve sustainable development.

Technical quality

Technical quality refers to the level of engineering, design, and functionality of a product, process, or system. In the context of durability and sustainable development, technical quality plays a crucial role in ensuring that products and processes are not only efficient, but also environmentally friendly and socially responsible.

Process quality

Process quality refers to the effectiveness, efficiency, and reliability of processes used in achieving sustainable development and durability goals. It is concerned with ensuring that processes are designed, executed, and improved in a manner that supports the long-term viability of sustainable development.

Site quality

Site quality refers to the physical and natural characteristics of a site that influence its ability to sustain human activities and meet the needs of current and future generations. In the context of durability and sustainable development, site quality is critical because it impacts a site's ability to achieve sustainability objectives.
