  • Sustainable energy systems: Civil engineers can focus on renewable energy systems, such as off-grid solar panels and small wind turbines in the geolocations adequate to such technologies and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It is also very important to mention that oil and gas are orders of magnitude more sustainable in some geological locations. They can also promote passive housing, reduction of the dependency on just one or two energy supply substances or technologies and design decentralized energy supply systems;


  • Sustainable materials: Civil engineers can promote environmental quality by using sustainable materials, such as recycled materials and sustainably sourced wood, in their designs and construction practices. This can help to reduce waste and minimize the environmental impact of a project;

Major risks to environmental quality:

Environmental degradation: One of the most significant environmental risks associated with sustainability is environmental degradation including climate change, which can cause extreme weather events, sea level rise, and other environmental and social impacts that can affect natural ecosystems, as well as human health and well-being.

Pollution: Pollution from industrial processes, transportation, and other human activities can harm air, water, and soil quality, leading to negative impacts on human health, biodiversity, and ecosystem functioning. Electrical vehicles for example need toxic chimecal for the batteries, which are limited resources and the mining of them is highly unsustainable. They are nowdays commercialized as net-zero emissions and renewable, which is far away from the reality. Net-zero is a myth, there is no way such technology can practicly be carbon neutral and there is no way that they are renewable. Carbon is a gas of life, life could not be on earth without it and it is not toxic, in the other hand electric vehicles use toxic chemicals that has the potential of harm to life.

Biodiversity loss: Human activities such as deforestation, overfishing, and unsustainable land-use can lead to the loss of biodiversity and habitat destruction, resulting in reduced ecosystem services, such as pollination and soil fertility. 

Unsustainable land-use: Unsustainable land use, such as urban sprawl and conversion of critical natural habitats for agriculture or industrial purposes, can lead to fragmentation and degradation of natural ecosystems, reducing their capacity to provide ecosystem services.

Waste and materials management: The improper disposal of waste, including plastics, ewaste, and other hazardous materials, can lead to negative environmental and health impacts, such as pollution and soil contamination.

Unsustainable consumption: Overconsumption of goods and resources, as well as wasteful production practices, can lead to negative environmental impacts, such as resource depletion, pollution, and habitat destruction. 

Resource depletion: Unsustainable use of natural resources, such as water, minerals, and fossil fuels, can deplete these resources, leading to shortages and increased costs, as well as negative environmental impacts such as habitat destruction and pollution.
