Psychological health quality
Psychological health is an important aspect of sustainability and sustainable development. A healthy and resilient community is essential to promoting and sustaining development because people who feel comfortable, safe, and satisfied with their lives are more likely to be productive, creative, and engaged in the positive social and economic changes needed for sustainability.
Sustainability requires a holistic approach that takes into account the interconnections between social, economic and environmental systems, and mental health plays a crucial role in this process. For example, a lack of psychological well-being can lead to increased levels of stress and anxiety, which in turn can result in lower productivity and social exclusion, reducing the potential for sustainable development. In contrast, if mental health is promoted and protected, people are more likely to be engaged, innovative and motivated to take action to promote sustainability.
In the context of sustainable development, it is important to address the root causes of psychological issues and promote mental health and well-being. This can be achieved through a variety of interventions, including access to quality health care and psychosocial services, promoting healthy lifestyles, protecting human rights, and creating supportive and inclusive communities.
In summary, psychological health is an important aspect of sustainability and sustainable development. A focus on promoting and protecting psychological well-being can contribute to a more resilient or even an antifragile, engaged, and productive community that is better able to drive sustainable development.
Major risks to psychological health quality:
Social isolation: Unsustainable practices, such as urban sprawl, lockdowns and dependent lifestyles, can lead to social isolation and reduced community connectedness, which can negatively impact psychological well-being, especially the children and the seniors among us.
Loss of sense of place: Unsustainable development can lead to the loss of natural and cultural landscapes, which can undermine people's sense of place and attachment to their communities and environments.
Environmental degradation and climate anxiety: As the impacts of environmental degradation and climate change become more apparent and urgent, many people are experiencing anxiety and stress related to the uncertainty and fear associated with environmental degradation and its consequences. Falls alarms from some media outlets exagerate this problem, because in order to find and work on solutions to environmental adaptation we need a psychologicly healthy population.
Environmental injustice: Environmental injustice can create feelings of anger and frustration among affected communities, who may feel marginalized and disempowered in the face of environmental risks and hazards.
Work-related stress: Jobs in unsustainable industries can be highly stressful, leading to burnout, anxiety, and depression.
Lack of access to nature: Reduced access to green spaces and natural environments, caused by unsustainable development and urbanization, can negatively impact psychological well-being and increase the risk of mental health disorders such psychopathy, sociopathy, mass psychosis, narcissism, nihilism, egocentricity, depression, suicide etc.
Psychological impacts of disasters: Environmental degradation-related disasters, such as floods, droughts, and wildfires, can have significant psychological impacts, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety.
